Teamwork makes the dream work

We believe that to make meaningful change we have to step outside of our echo chambers. Collaboration and partnership is key to making good things happen and with this in mind our team bring their awesomeness and skills to the Cleaner Seas mission.

Avril Greenaway

Re-Founder & Director, Cleaner Seas Project - Co-founder Cleaner Seas Group - Owner In On Or By The Sea.

Avril has been part of Cleaner Seas since its beginnings in 2013, originally brought in to shape the brand and communications. Over a decade later, she now leads the project, blending a deep understanding of environmental science with hands-on experience in campaigning, policy, and creative, solutions-based action.

With a background of design and marketing, and with 12 years working in the environmental sector, including roles as Marketing Director and Impact Director; Avril co-founded the Cleaner Seas Group in 2018, a start up, now scale up, focused on reducing microfibre pollution at source; a response to find solutions to the microplastic issues we were raising awareness about.

She is a member of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Microplastics and contributed to the APPG’s Microplastics Report, which supports a new Microfibre Bill introduced in UK Parliament. Avril has chaired and spoken on national panels exploring ocean issues, and regularly appears as a speaker and advocate for sustainable solutions. She is also an ambassador for Made for Life Organics, a Kings Award for Enterprise winner and B Corp, championing organic skincare, holistic wellbeing and conscious business.

Spending as much time as she can in, on, or by the sea; Avril is a gig rower, cox, and nature photographer. Her work is grounded in lived connection with the coastline, and a belief that storytelling, science, and systems thinking all have a role to play in protecting the planet.

BARNABY KAY

Director Cleaner Seas Project - Chair of the Two Bays Trust.

Barney is a passionate advocate for our oceans, having spent much of his life on the North Coast of Cornwall. When not in, on or under the sea, Barney spends his time campaigning for the protection of our coastal waters, and spreading the word about reducing humanity’s reliance on single use plastics.

Having trained as an actor, Barney carved out a successful career in theatre, TV, film and radio, appearing in many high profile and award-winning productions. Understandably, his favourite role was as a small boat fisherman, filming in the wild seas around the Isle of Man! The pandemic forced Barney to diversify, and he has since enjoyed working as a director and writer in audio drama.

Barney says, “I’ve been so lucky to work for so long in such an exciting and rewarding job, but the time has come to embrace my real passion - to preserve and protect our fragile marine environments”.
